| Discrimination Against Rottweilers On a daily basis in this vast world of ours, in every country, continent, city, and state even during this day and age we live in, discrimination still exists. The description of discrimination is simply stated: "To make a clear distinction; to differentiate; to be selective. To behave on the basis of prejudice." For one to act upon this to another living creature, it should never come to light in anyone's lifetime. We realize that many have thought the same dream, time and time again, only if hatred and fear of the unknown never existed in this man’s world, how much better humanity would be as a whole! Those of us who literally understand how society behaves, we all know way to well that everyone will be in direct relationship to some sort of discrimination in their lifetime, in one way or another. How sad, but true! Not only can this make people bitter, angry, and hurt, but also one suffers through being embarrassed, ridiculed, and humiliated even from their closest peers. Granted, we’re relating to human behaviors, but it's also unfortunate that animals, even our canine companions can also be discriminated against. Which in turn, comes back to haunt us humans, because after-all, we own and care for our beloved pets. So, in a nutshell when one of our dogs is going through this horrible ordeal, we in turn also go through it with them. Unfortunately, dogs cannot speak for themselves! We as humans, their owners and caretakers, must speak for them. Especially, when it comes to the urgency of life and death of our companions. Everyday new ordinances are being passed around this world for breed-specific legislation a.k.a. "BSL". Our breed, the Rottweiler, along with other well-known breeds like the German Shepherd, Pit Bull and bully breeds, Mastiff breeds, etc., are being discriminated against because the governments feel these specific breeds are dangerous to the general public. Unfortunately, most of the general public feels that this is a step in the right direction. Almost daily, people hear horrible coverage on the news that a vicious Rottweiler or other so-called dangerous breed attacked, mauled, and killed an innocent fluffy white dog or child. So why not make laws against dangerous animals? Don’t we want to save human lives? Well, of course human life is of the utmost importance over animals! However, the government always goes the easiest way out when contemplated with such turmoil, issues, concerns, and problems. They feel if we get rid of the breed as a whole, then no more complaints will be made from the public. They don’t realize that this really doesn’t solve anything. Are we still not having specific gun law issues in America? Aren’t more people accidentally shot or victimized every day due to firearms, compared to dog related crimes or deaths? Do we still not have innocent people die every day from drunk drivers who had their licenses revoked or suspended? What about our homes being broken into, automobiles, property, and people being stolen, kidnapped, robbed, murdered, raped…? We as a government haven’t solved any of these issues even with the strictest guidelines and laws. People also don’t seem to realize that they never get the true facts to any given situation, the actual cause behind the provocation, if any, or if it even was a breed-specific dog. Many a times a headline story like this causes all ears due to the mere “Rottweiler or Pit-Bull” word spoken, but later it’s been confirmed that a mixed stray Lab, a terrier, or other unknown dog, did the actual damage. Whatever sells news and papers, is what is important to these businesses, not the actual details! Now we’re not saying these types of breeds have never done anything negative, however the facts are more important of the situation, not necessarily the statistics, because they can be based on rumors, stories, untold incidents, and false allegations. When the truth comes out of these circumstances, the majority of the time, it’s been due to human error. As dog owner’s our problems begin with the people first, not the dogs. If only there were stricter more specific laws in place for the humans being more responsible for their animal’s actions, regarding public safety, then it seems there wouldn’t be as many issues. For instance, prior to purchasing, one must pass a dog ownership class, have a background check, and be correctly matched according to their lifestyles/personalities for a specific breed, to receive a special license. The proceeds could go towards no-kill shelters and rescue organizations. Once the license is obtained, they’re then placed on a list to purchase from an ethical respected licensed breeder. Then periodically the dog, owner, and family members must pass other classes in regards to proper obedience, behavior, temperament, care, and ownership throughout the lifetime of their companion. Granted there are those who don’t ever regard any law, doing as they wish, and could care less of the circumstances. But at least it would be a step in a more positive direction for both human and animal alike. Puppy mills, pet stores, over breeding, backyard type breeding, dogs related to illegal narcotics, filling voids for human's egos, guarding people’s homes in the wrong fashion and have their animals attack the public just for their own amusement and crimes, dog fighting, basically dogs owned by the wrong type of people, letting them roam freely, not having properly secure fencing, allowing dogs out on ties kept out all day with no human contact, not supervising the animals at all times especially around children and strangers, not training their dogs, not using crates when necessary, etc. These are some of the key issues why dogs, are becoming known as, dangerous to the general public. Initially, it starts with the humans – the dog’s owners –not the dogs! Anyways, “BSL” is causing huge problems for those humans that take great care and go beyond the call of dog ownership. Why you ask? As usual, it’s only the few that ruin it for the majority of law binding citizens. Those of us that care deeply for our breeds of dogs take great steps and enormous amounts of our time in our lives to not only educate the general public about dog ownership, but also about the specific breeds we own. We also fight on a daily basis in hopes of keeping our own beloved animals that lie next to us and give us unconditional attention, love, and devotion. We’ll also loose our rights as dog owners of a wonderful breed if the government sadly has its own way! If we can only stop for a moment and think about all those wonderful breed-specific dogs that are used for public service. What would happen to them? Dogs used for the impaired, search and rescue, the military, K-9 work, etc. Most of these types of dogs have working breeds behind them, such as, the German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Bullies, and Mastiffs. In conclusion, our Rottweilers will soon be extinct if we as dog owners that say we care so much about this breed, don’t step up to the plate when it’s needed the most, and do something for them.
